Basement Systems Helps Out Valley Food Banks
As part of an ongoing mission to be more involved in the local community and help out organizations in need, Basement Systems recently lent a hand with a food drive held by Griffin Hospital and the Valley United Way. Employees from Griffin Hospital donated 1,649 cases (27,900 cans, jars, packages) of food to the Spooner House homeless shelter and to community food banks (including Area Congregations Together, St. Vincent DePaul, Salvation Army, Lower Naugatuck Valley Red Cross, Seymour/Oxford Food Bank at Trinity Church, PCRC, and the Birmingham Group.
On Thursday, April 16, the food was delivered to the Basement Systems headquarters' new 57,000 square foot warehouse. Around 60 Griffin Hospital employees and dozens of Basement Systems workers were there to unload the truck and disperse the goods to the food banks. The food arrived in a tractor trailer and local food banks drew from the shipment so they could stock their food banks.
Valley United Way President Jack Walsh coordinated the event and identified the needs of each food pantry. He has said that the Valley's food banks have been seeing record requests for food assistance and have had waiting lists at times.
