Sign #1: Flooding Through Wall Cracks

One of the most common areas of water or moisture leakage in a basement is through the walls. Usually a side effect of the natural curing process of concrete, these cracks usually do not threaten the foundation. Even though this is a common problem, it does not mean it should be left untreated. When water starts to leak through your basement walls, it can quickly lead to a very serious flood in your home.

What should you be on the lookout for?

• Visible vertical cracks on the walls of your basement.
• Water residue on the walls of your basement. This can look like an orange, minerally substance, reference photo below.  
• Start by taking a walk through your basement…this is the time to do it!

Sign #2: Leaky Basement Windows

A leaking basement window is another common sign of a wet basement. Maybe even a bit more obvious than a leaky wall crack, a leaky window is of equal concern.  Basement windows are often made using inexpensive steel or wood frames. As these materials age, they will begin to break down, showing signs of rust, corrosion, and decay. This can lead to windowpanes and even the frame itself to hang loosely causing an opening in your basement wall.

What should you be on the lookout for?

• Water residue underneath your basement window.
• Any openings around your basement window.

Sign #3: Basement Leakage through Stairway 

A leaking hatchway door can be a nuisance for homeowners who'd like their basement to be dry -- especially in a finished basement! A hatchway entrance is typically constructed separately from the rest of the home. This makes it vulnerable to flooding from many different areas.

What should you be on the lookout for?

There are 3 common areas of water leakage associated with the stairway:

• Where the hatchway and foundation meet.
• Through cracks in the concrete.
