3 Common Signs of a Wet Basement

summary

With many homeowners stuck inside due to the current pandemic, the timing is perfect to educate and prepare yourself for how to deal with a wet basement. Of course, no one wants a wet basement, but spring showers are on their way and we want you to be confident that your basement will stay dry!

Here at Connecticut Basement Systems, our vision continues to be a world with healthy, safe, and efficient homes.

We want to share some common signs that might indicate a wet basement in hopes you can identify them and give us a call for a permanent solution. If you can identify any of these signs (especially more than one!) or If you notice any type of water or moisture problems in your basement, regardless of the area, please contact us at 1-800-261-3693 so we can schedule a free, no-obligation estimate.

Sign #1: Flooding Through Wall Cracks

One of the most common areas of water or moisture leakage in a basement is through the walls. Usually a side effect of the natural curing process of concrete, these cracks usually do not threaten the foundation. Even though this is a common problem, it does not mean it should be left untreated. When water starts to leak through your basement walls, it can quickly lead to a very serious flood in your home.

What should you be on the lookout for?

  • Visible vertical cracks on the walls of your basement.
  • Water residue on the walls of your basement. This can look like an orange, minerally substance, reference photo below.
  • Start by taking a walk through your basement…this is the time to do it!

Wall Crack

Many homeowners will often try to repair cracks by applying caulking material or epoxy. Unfortunately, this superficial fix does not stop water from filling the crack.

Our Solution: Repairing a basement wall crack may sound like a complicated project, but not for our experienced Foremen who are equipped to handle this type of problem with our patented crack repair system: FlexiSpan.

Sign #2: Leaky Basement Windows

A leaking basement window is another common sign of a wet basement. Maybe even a bit more obvious than a leaky wall crack, a leaky window is of equal concern.  Basement windows are often made using inexpensive steel or wood frames. As these materials age, they will begin to break down, showing signs of rust, corrosion, and decay. This can lead to windowpanes and even the frame itself to hang loosely causing an opening in your basement wall.

What should you be on the lookout for?

  • Water residue underneath your basement window.
  • Any openings around your basement window.
  • Consider the age of your basement windows. Have they ever been replaced?

Sign #3: Basement Leakage through Stairway

A leaking hatchway door can be a nuisance for homeowners who'd like their basement to be dry -- especially in a finished basement! A hatchway entrance is typically constructed separately from the rest of the home. This makes it vulnerable to flooding from many different areas.

What should you be on the lookout for?

There are 3 common areas of water leakage associated with the stairway:

  • Underneath metal hatchway doors.
  • Where the hatchway and foundation meet.
  • Through cracks in the concrete.

Our Solution: A flooding stairway can be solved with our TrenchDrain solution. This solution is meant to be used as part of an existing perimeter drain system. It spans the staircase, collecting water that spills down and directs it to your drain and sump pump system. This system can span the entrance of the hatchway or can be extended inside the hatchway itself.
