Basement Systems Employee Joins Mission Trip to Dominican Republic
Batey, DR is mainly inhabited by Haitian migrant workers making very little money working laborious hours in sugar cane fields. While such work was once prosperous, workers are now making hardly any money to support themselves-- let alone their families.
In addition, their children are being denied citizenship, thus having little to no education. The government also denies assisting the locals in many cases and has in many ways seemingly disowned Batey.
In some local areas, the people are suffering from poor nutrition, unsanitary living conditions, and disease.
The trip is being organized by another member of the same church who is also a member of the Haitian American Nurses Association (HANA). She has lead several trips bringing medical aid to Haiti. For this trip, she is working with the Batey Relief Alliance (BRA) to bring aid to the DR.
People can support this cause by donating supplies, money, and even sponsoring one of the young adults.
The team is collecting: gauze, children/adult Motrin, anti-diarrhea medication, anti-nausea, stomach medication such as tums, anti-fungal creams, and little baggies for distributing medications.
The trip costs $1, 300 per person, which includes airfare, lodging, meals and transportationâÂÂitems that were originally unnecessary as a means to serve, but have been insisted upon by the BRA. The team is exceedingly grateful.
